Join us for a screening of the Taiwan-based political thriller Formosa Betrayed (starring James Van Der Beek, Will Tiao, and Tzi Ma). Inspired by actual events, the film follows an FBI agent as his investigation of the murder of a Taiwanese professor at an American college takes him from Chicago to the streets of Taipei. As the investigation progresses, the agent finds himself embroiled in a web of secrets, lies, and power clashes rooted deeper in the Taiwanese government than he ever anticipated.
Following the screening, writer, producer, and actor Will Tiao will join us for a Q&A session. Tiao’s insights into Taiwan’s political climate are highly relevant in the wake of the historic 2016 election of President Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan’s first female leader. As the first American movie to explore the issue of Taiwanese independence, this film initiates a conversation that is long overdue.
