the flip side2018 | USA | 25 mins | Documentary Short
Directed by Val Wang THE FLIP SIDE presents the increasingly globalized circus world, where disparate people and acrobatic cultures come together, clash, and ultimately transform each other. We meet Daqi, a Chinese circus artist who leaves home at age 9 to train at an elite state-run circus academy. Restless after ascending to the zenith of the Chinese circus world, he leaves his stable “iron rice bowl” job to perform with Cirque du Soleil. Though Daqi possesses extraordinary technical skills, he has a difficult journey ahead to develop an artist’s expressive power. He eventually collides with Shana Carroll, a trapeze star who began with the San Francisco-based Pickle Family Circus, where she trained with a Chinese coach and even married the coach’s Chinese protégé, then has a stint with Cirque du Soleil. Daqi grows as an artist when he joins Shana’s circus troupe, 7 Fingers, whose intimate circus shows are based on the individual artists’ stories. Director's Bio: VAL WANG is a filmmaker and author particularly interested in the intersection of the personal and the global. She most recently created and produced Planet Takeout, an interactive, multiplatform documentary for WGBH on the role of Chinese takeouts as a vital cultural crossroads in America. Her other multimedia work has been broadcast on PBS, WGBH Radio, and WBUR, among others. Her memoir “Beijing Bastard” details her coming of age against the backdrop of Beijing’s own transformation around the turn of the century. She lives in Cambridge and teaches creative writing and media production as an Assistant Professor in the English and Media Studies Department of Bentley University. |

MAP for Health: 25 Years of Asian Pride2018 | USA | 17 mins | Short
Directed by Albert Chan At the height of the AIDS epidemic, the rate of HIV infection among Asian-Pacific Islanders was the fastest growing among all ethnic groups, and yet there were no prevention and education programs targeting them in Massachusetts. MAP for Health: 25 Years of Asian Pride tells the story of a group of young Asian-Pacific Islanders who banded together in a grassroots effort to address a critical, unaddressed need in the Massachusetts Asian-Pacific Islander community during the AIDS crisis, and how the organization has evolved over the years, at one point with a full-time staff of ten, expanding and shifting its focus along the way. It is an inspirational example of how Asian-Pacific Islanders can pool their passion, talents, and resources together to accomplish something incredible and long-lasting. Director's Bio: Albert M. Chan is a Chinese-Canadian filmmaker and actor whose first film, Fate Scores, was recognized by the National Film Board of Canada.
