The session was held at the Asian American Resource Workshop, 888 Washington Street, Suite 102, Boston, MA. Asian Pacific Americans have long been making waves in all aspects of American life, but their stories have often been lost in general U.S. discourse. “Short Waves: Stories Shaping Our Community,” hopes to bring light to these stories through locally made, community driven short films about the Asian American experience and community. Geared towards novice filmmakers, the one-day workshop provided hands-on instruction on the production of a short film/video, storyboarding, casting, and basic editing on Mac using iMovie. Workshop participants were required to have access to their own digital camera/have a familiarity with a basic camcorder, and access to film editing resources post workshop. This workshop used iMovie as a teaching tool. Through this workshop participants were shown resources on how to create a short, for the intention of submission to the “Short Waves: Stories Shaping Our Community” Open Call this April. Participants were required to do some preparatory work in advance of the workshop, and were encouraged (not required) to bring photos and recorded footage to the workshop. About the Workshop Presenter: Tri Quach is a refugee, youth organizer, and visual artist. He has been helping teach the media class at UMASS Boston with professor Shirley Tang for many years. That AsAmSt 370 class produces personal stories from the students. Through many years of providing crash courses on I-Movie and the video making process in the class, he has developed a simple way for new filmmakers to jump right in and develop their own stories. Sometimes the hardest thing is to know where to start. This workshop will provide you with a road map to help get you on your way.
